Happy Earth Day! My kids have been busy doing activities this week, focusing on what the Earth does for all inhabitants and how important it is for us as humans. We've also been discussing ecologically friendly choices that our family can do everyday to help improve the Earth. Over the years, we have been gradually reducing our use of plastics.  There are BILLIONS of plastic toothbrushes discarded each year all around the world. For our family of 6, we go through about 18 toothbrushes a year, or more.  One small change from a plastic toothbrush, to a natural, biodegradable bamboo toothbrush can positively impact our environment right now and improve it for future generations.

While I was shopping online, I found Fifth & Eco and purchased their Kids Charcoal Bamboo Toothbrushes.  This pack has 4 toothbrushes included, with different animal designs to help interest kids in brushing their teeth, as well as letting us all know whose is whose!  The brush is made of extra soft nylon bristles infused with activated charcoal for a more thorough clean.  The handle is made of sustainable, natural bamboo with vegan glue.  The packaging is from recycled materials.  Lastly, but definitely not least, I was very excited that these toothbrushes are super budget-friendly as well! After trying out the toothbrushes, I actually emailed the company to share my satisfaction.  I wanted to offer a full blog review to give others a chance to understand this brand better.
When I reached out, Gina, one of the partners from Fifth & Eco, promptly responded back and I asked if she'd share more about how Fifth & Eco came about.

"Fifth & Eco came about simply because we became shockingly aware of just how much plastic was in our home and became adamant we would reduce the amount of waste we generate. I am proud to say, as a family of four, we throw away only 1-2 small bags of garbage per week. The majority of our waste is recycled, composted or fed to our chickens. When it came time to switch to eco-friendly products, we found them often lacking in quality or overpriced or both! Our products are designed to make it easy for you to choose eco-friendly, sustainable products, without sacrificing the quality and performance you get from your old plastic favorites. If we can get our kids loving their bamboo toothbrushes early on, that is a lot of plastic waste we can avoid and reduce your plastic footprint!"

"After receiving positive feedback about our adult toothbrushes, we began designing a kids’ toothbrush that was easy for little hands to hold, small and soft while still delivering a really good clean. The bristles are infused with activated charcoal which is completely safe for children. Our girls tested 4 different styles of toothbrushes before we settled on our design based on their preferences. The girls also chose the animal designs that appear on toothbrushes which makes them easy to tell apart. There are 8 designs in total so there are no double ups in an 8 pack."
When your package arrives, it's exactly as shown.  In previously 100% recycled boxes that can be recycled again.
The directions are also printed on the packaging.  Because the toothbrushes haven't been sealed or chemically treated, it's important to follow the steps to enjoy a longer lasting toothbrush.

The first step is to wash the bristles in warm water, gently rubbing with your finger to dislodge any loose bristles prior to brushing.

When done brushing, be sure to rinse the entire brush thoroughly and allow to air dry. Do not store in a cup to avoid water pooling at the bottom, which is the proper environment for bacteria and mold growth.  You can hang to dry in a toothbrush hanger, set horizontally across your cup or Fifth & Eco suggests trying a fun, decorative clothing peg!
Dentists recommend using a soft bristled brush to brush your teeth with, at least twice a day for the best oral health.  Using gentle pressure, take at least 2 minutes brushing, in short circular stroke motions per side of each tooth- inner, outer and chewing.
Here are my oldest and youngest daughters, they LOVE their Fifth & Eco Toothbrushes!
What's my favorite thing about this product?
Our family feels great to be taking action to be more environmentally responsible. They love having a designated animal on their brush, they love how the handle is the perfect size for their hands and the wood feels smooth and natural.

Is there anything I'd change about this product?
I've had a very pleasant experience with Fifth & Eco. The kids have been brushing their teeth for a week and the bristles haven't frayed at all. When we're done with our toothbrushes, we will repurpose them, or remove the bristles and compost the handles. At this time, I feel like Fifth & Eco Charcoal Bamboo Toothbrushes are the best bargain for my family.

I give Fifth & Eco a 9.5/10!

  3. We just recently switched to bamboo tooth brushes this year for Earth day! The kids like them but struggle a little bit with the size of the heads. Specific kids sizes would be great! Would love to try these!
