When you're lactating, you know that having a portable breast pump is beneficial.  As a former exclusive pumping (EP) mama, I took my pump with me everywhere. Even now, I'm exclusively nursing my baby, but I pump to donate and every ounce collected really counts.
I have never seen something that's quite as handy as the Haakaa Silicone Breast Pump. This product really is a space-saver and there's no awkwardness of disassembly/reassembly.  It fits conveniently in your purse or diaper bag and only has 2 easy-to-clean parts: the pump and the lid!
The Haakaa is perfect for anyone wanting to start building up a stash.  It can work as a pump OR a milk collector.  I'm excited to tell you more about how this product works, how it differs from other manual pumps and everything I like and don't like about it!

Haakaa is a family-owned and ran company in New Zealand with a wide range of products for families, such as drinking, eating, teething, baby care and breastfeeding supplies. All their products are made with environmentally friendly materials.  Haakaa wants to ensure that our children are protected from harmful chemicals and toxins, and all Haakaa products have been through intense safety compliancy tests.
"Haakaa was developed through our struggle to find non-toxic and safe products for my little sister Courtney. Courtney is special needs being born with Autism among other disabilites. When protecting her health and preserving the environment for her future became our top priority, haakaa was born. Over the years, we found it extremely difficult to find green products suitable for infants and children. With most Eco baby brands only carrying a limited range and shipping to New Zealand was difficult and expensive. That was when we realised we could develop a range that is not only convenient and versatile, but also safe for more parents and their babies."
I was sent the 150ml Haakaa Silicone Breast Pump in exchange for sharing my honest opinion on the product.  This is currently the largest size available.  150ml is approximately 5.07 ounces.  So it holds a decent amount of breast milk.  There is also a 90ml option available, that would be even MORE of a space-saver.
The Haakaa Silicone Breast Pump

- one SUPER EASY piece to clean with optional Cap (shown above) or Flower Stopper (shown below) to help avoid contamination before storing milk
- can be used to pump breast milk
- collects milk from one breast while nursing on other breast
- if flexible and comfortable for any size breasts
I love that this pump has a suction base and I just adore the Flower Stopper!  There are 4 colors available to choose from.  These features really add extra assurance that you won't tip over and spill that precious liquid gold. The accessories that are available help make the experience of collecting breastmilk more enjoyable!
 So how does it work?
1.  Starting with clean hands and a clean/sterilized Haakaa, place the flange (top) onto your nipple.  My tip is to flip the flange down (as shown in image below) and center your nipple in then flip it back up to get the perfect positioning.
2.  Give a few squeezes to the bulb of the Haakaa.  You want it to suction but also stay secured.  You may have to readjust a few times the first time to get the right amount of suction.  Then you should be able to gently pump the bulb to create some movement and see some drops of breastmilk.
Once a stream is coming out and your milk is flowing along is when the Haakaa shows off how incredibly magic it is!  Just leave it suctioned and it'll catch your letdown.  If you're looking to build up a stash without all the hassle of pumping, this is definitely your go-to!
I know several people that are completely successful with being able to make the Haakaa Breast Pump actually work as a pump, but I personally find it best used as a milk catcher.  I couldn't get the best suction to keep it secure and have proper movement after numerous tries.  Perhaps because I have larger breasts? Not sure but it will attach good enough to catch my letdown while nursing on the other side.  I can get several ounces (I actually got 3 once!!!) this way.  I do not know of any other product that will hold this much milk while using it this way.  However, now that my baby is much more active, it is a little trickier to nurse and pump simultaneously, so I'm dedicating about half an hour twice a week to express milk.  At this point, I have to say that if you're going to be exclusively pumping or needing to provide the majority of your breastmilk sans breast, this may not be the best option to give you maximum output.  The Haakaa will be most convenient for a quick relief, in my opinion. For instance if you were stuck in traffic, running errands, going shopping, going on a date, at a family get-together or if you feel too much engorgement overnight, the Haakaa can help tremendously!
What's my favorite thing about the Haakaa Breast Pump?
I think it is the perfect size and the simplicity of the design.  I love that it's soft, conforming comfortably to me, no hard plastic parts pushing against me.  I love that the company cares so much about eco-friendly living and have been able to help many parents save up milk for their babies.  I love how much milk it will hold.  I love so many things about it, I can't just pick one!
Is there anything I'd change about it?
I am not the inventive type, so this idea may be wild, but maybe a separate piece to insert into the flange that would help people like me keep the suction while pumping the bulb. It may have to have more of a lip on the edge of the flange to attach this extra piece onto.  If there was a way to keep better suction while pumping, I'd give this 11 points!
I give the Haakaa Breast Pump a 8.5/10!

  1. I had never heard of the Haakaa Breast Pump before. I really like that the pump has only two pieces. I hate assembling and taking apart the many small pieces on mine.

  5. Love my Haaka! Used it to collect milk on the other side rather than an actual pump and it was great. It is my go-to gift for baby showers.
