Welcome to Make it Green in 2015! During the following weeks, stay tuned to learn a variety of ways to easily make more healthy and ecologically friendly choices for the New Year!
You probably already know that our family started using cloth diapers with our youngest child. It was something that we thought was necessary, after thinking about the landfill contribution that we were aiding in. Just one baby using a minimum of 6 disposable diapers a day equals well over 2100 soiled diapers per year being put in the landfill. With the average child being between 2-3 years of age before potty-trained, you can expect to put over 5600 disposable diapers in the trash. "An estimated 27.4 billion disposable diapers are used each year in the US, resulting in a possible 3.4 million tons of used diapers adding to landfills each year."- from Wikipedia
These diapers contain a Super Absorbent Polymer (source) which is a plastic, Dioxins (source) which is a carcinogenic chemical, bleach, dye, fragrances and adhesives are other additives and there's even more stuff in disposable diapers (source). Doesn't sound too good, does it?
Don't worry though... This is something you are easily able to change! By switching to cloth diapers, you not only save the environment, but you save money and you give your baby a much healthier alternative for their skin. Materials used in cloth diapers differ between the manufacturers. There are many options when it comes to cloth. I love trying all the different kinds of cloth diapers that are available. I suggest doing this because then it's easier to find the type of diaper that fits well into your lifestyle. I have become fond of All-In-Two (AI2) diapers and when I found out a local WAHM makes them, I couldn't wait to provide a review for you of Owl Be Green! I was sent an AI2 diaper for reviewing purposes.
Owl Be Green is ran by a WAHM, Amy Mangan in Coralville, Iowa. She began sewing diapers for her youngest son, which she loved doing. She found other WAHM's on Facebook making/selling diapers and wanted to give it a try to be able to have an income to be able to stay at home with her toddler. She developed a pattern inspired from a commercially-available diaper that she liked, making it a more trim fit, added leg gussets and snaps inside for the insert so it would stay in place while worn.
Amy says she has so much fun making them and looking for amazing new fabrics. All her products are compliant with CPSIA regulations and she works very hard to create a safe, quality product.
......................................................................................
Most of Owl Be Green AI2 covers are comprised of an outer layer of 100% woven cotton, with an inside layer of PUL, as well as double leg gusset- a waterproof fabric to contain and stop leaks. The diaper has fold over elastic around the edge, keeping the diaper snug everywhere there's an opening. What makes this diaper an AI2? Owl Be Green also makes serged, contoured, three layer medium hemp fleece soaker inserts topped with soft cotton velour, specifically made to snap in an Owl Be Green cover. Although you can use a prefold, flat or fitted as well. These diapers are made to fit between 10-35 pounds. There are 2 rows of 2 rise resin snap adjustments. There is a single row with a total of 12 waist snaps. The wings have two snaps each. Here are photos showing how the sizes vary.
This print is called Fox and Moose Friends and is available HERE to purchase. I think it's a great pattern! This outer material is a strong knit, and it is sewn together very well, which has me anticipating it'll easily keep up with all the wear and laundering. Notice the leg gussets and snaps for the hemp soaker in photos below.
So you're wondering about the fit, probably. I have to say that it is super trim, the insert lasted 3 hours easily. We have had this on the bum twice, Karebear is 26 pounds, and 15 months old and I love the fit on her! Isn't it cute?

*** UPDATED! ***
New pics of diaper on my 7 week old newborn- 7/20/2016!
After thorough use with cloth diaper baby #1, this diaper is still in GREAT shape to reuse with cloth diaper baby #2! It fits excellent, and no messy leaks from newborn exclusively breastfeed poop, which she did shortly after photos were taken.
What's my favorite thing about this diaper? That you can "restuff" it, reusing the cover throughout the day. Less laundry is good and GREEN!
Is there anything I'd change about it? From what I've seen and how I've been able to use it, I do not have anything that I'd change! It works great!
I give Owl Be Green a 10/10!
